FirstStep, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is a web-based interactive tool for helping individuals who are homeless to access federal benefit programs. The tool contains information pertaining to income assistance, health care assistance, food assistance, housing assistance, employment services, alcohol and drug abuse treatment, child care, life skills, mental health and counseling services, and HIV/AIDS services.

This report, published by the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, discusses key issues faced by homeless young adults and articulates effective short- and long-term strategies for addressing them. The report is organized around four main topics: health care, housing, education/employment, and social support. For each topic, the report offers brief descriptions of service barriers and short and long-term strategies for overcoming them.

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council (HCH)is a membership organization comprised of organizational members and individuals who are organized as the HCH Clinicians' Network. The National Resource Center on Homelessness and Mental Illness (NRCHMI) is the only national center specifically focused on the effective organization and delivery of services for people who are homeless and have serious mental illnesses. NRCHMI offers workshops and trainings, provides technical assistance, develops publications on homelessness, housing and mental health issues, maintains an extensive resource library, and responds to information requests from the field.
